There were probably not any happier cowboys at the fourth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo than Steven Dent and Bradley Harter.

Dent, a bareback rider from Mullin, Neb., didn’t get to come to the “Daddy” last year as he had injured his knee and missed competition from June to September. That break from the action had him out of the top 15 and he narrowly missed qualifying for his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). He finished the 2009 season in 19th place.

Dent didn’t like being at home in December and is on a mission to qualify for the NFR again this year. He is currently second in the world standings. He took the lead in the second round on Tuesday with an 80-point effort on Harry Vold Rodeo’s Midnight Annie. Combined with his score from Monday, he now leads the over-all standings with a total of 159 points. Caleb Bennett, from Bluffdale, Utah, took the lead in the first round on Monday and is second over-all with 157.

In the saddle bronc riding, Bradley Harter, from Weatherford, Texas, had an outstanding ride on Stace Sith Pro Rodeo’s Goin’ South to score 86. Harter leads the over-all standings with 165 points. He is 16th in the world standings so any money he can win here will help him make up ground.

Kory Koontz, from Sudan, Texas, found some rejuvenation in a young team roping partner, Colby Lovell from Madisonville, Texas. Sudan was about ready to hang up his rope and retire after a very successful career that has seen him qualifying for the NFR 14 times. The duo are just coming off of a Reno Rodeo win. With Lovell doing the heading and Koontz heeling, they stopped the clock in 7.6 seconds. Unfortunatley, a 17.5 second run Monday will keep them from qualifying for the finals.

The new leaders in the over-all category of team roping are Jesse Echtler, from Huntsville, Texas, and Pat Grieve, from Baggs, Wyo. Echtler who is originally from Eagle, Colo., roped two feet for Grieve in 8.0 seconds in the second round, which is currently second.

Hunter Cure from Holliday, Texas leads the second round of steer wrestling with an 8.5 second run. Casey McMillen, from Redmond, Ore., is first over-all with a total of 17.8 seconds. McMillen, has spent most of his life in Craig, Colo. He was born in Laramie, attended college in Casper, then back to Laramie at the University of Wyoming. He moved to Redmond after getting married just over a year ago.

Shane Proctor took the lead in the second round of bull riding with an 87-point ride on Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s bull #441. Proctor lives in Moorseville, N.C., now and is strticlty a bull rider. However, growing up in Washington he competed in every event he could. He came through the ranks of high school, then went to Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., where he qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo. He had a banner year in the Professional Bull Riders in 2009 finishing in 11th place. There were no bull riders that rode both of their bulls on Monday and Tuesday. If that keeps up, there will be some qualify for next Sunday’s finals with just one ride.
