Heartland ProRodeo Championships: One last chance to make Wrangler NFR

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Competition is intense when there is a lot on the line, and that will be the situation at the Heartland ProRodeo Championships, Oct. 9-17 at the Heart O’ Texas Coliseum in Waco.

Berths to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 3-12, in Las Vegas are on the line because the competition in Waco is the last one of the 2009 season prior to the world championships. In addition, PRCA Rookie of the Year titles in two events are up for grabs.

Throw in that total prize money of $471,000 is at stake, along with the Heartland buckles, and it sets the stage for a fantastic showdown in the Lone Star State. Just ask Texan Matt Reeves. The steer wrestler is unofficially $1,810 from making the Wrangler NFR. He is in the 16th spot and eyeing the 15th hole, held by Louisiana’s Gabe Ledoux. The Top 15 in the PRCA World Standings at the end of the season qualify for the Wrangler NFR.

“The best thing about Waco is I control my own destiny,” Reeves said. “I just have to go win something, and I figure that if I win second one time, I’m in, and I have two steers to do that on.”

Reeves had a chance to mathematically lock himself into the Wrangler NFR by winning some money in the Justin Boots Championships last month in Omaha, Neb., but let the opportunity slip through his fingers. Ledoux made $2,640 in Omaha, leaving the door open for Reeves. Reeves spoke to Ledoux in Omaha, and both were aware then of the realities of life on the bubble.

“It is kind of the way it works,” said Reeves, who qualified for the 2007 Wrangler NFR with a last-ditch effort. “He said that he wished it didn’t come down to this, but he wished me good luck.”

Reeves’ wife, Savanah, a barrel racer in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association finished in 16th place this season and will miss her chance to run barrels in Las Vegas. In Waco, Savanah’s dad, Sam Koenig, will haze for Reeves on Beamer, and Reeves will be aboard bulldoggin’ horse, Pokey.

“I better bear down and do something, or it will be a really bad holiday in my family,” Reeves said.

Also looking for a reason to celebrate is bareback rider Jared Keylon. The Fort Scott, Kan., cowboy is in 16th place in the world standings and trails 2008 Bareback Riding Rookie of the Year Jared Smith, in 15th place, by about $3,900.

Keylon, who turns 25 on Oct. 9, and Smith, 21, are both vying for their first trips to the Wrangler NFR and will both compete in Waco.

“I’m excited about it,” said Keylon about competing in Waco. “Everybody wishes we could all go (to the Wrangler NFR), because we’re all friends. I would never wish anything bad on anyone. I just want to do well and go.”

Reigning World Champion Tie-Down Roper Stran Smith, who won the world title thanks to money won in Waco last year, must now use Waco to get to Las Vegas to defend his title. Smith, in 17th place, trails 15th place Josh Peek by about $4,600. Jake Hannum, who is in 16th place, has concluded his 2009 season.

Rookie team roping heelers Justin Hendrick ($29,070) and Cody Doescher ($25,217) are in contention for Heartland and rookie honors. Also in a tight matchup are rookie bull riders Taylor Cowan ($42,365) and Tyler Willis ($42,248).

Performances at the Heartland ProRodeo Championships are set for 7 (CT) nightly, except on Oct. 11, when the rodeo begins at 4 p.m. The finals are at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17.

The Heartland ProRodeo Championships feature the top 30 qualifiers from the Heartland ProRodeo Series standings. The Heartland ProRodeo Series consists of PRCA rodeos with committee purses of $30,000 or less. Once in Waco, the points are erased and contestants compete for Heartland titles and prize money. The Championships field is comprised of 208 contestants. Two contestants have qualified in two events. Chambers, Neb., cowboy Kyle Whitaker will compete in the steer wrestling and saddle bronc riding, while Clint Hopping, of College Station, Texas, is entered in the bareback riding and bull riding.

The Heartland ProRodeo Steer Roping Finals are at 8 a.m. on Oct. 13. For more information on the Heartland finals, visit ProRodeo.com.

Field set for the Heartland ProRodeo Steer Roping Finals, Oct. 13

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A loaded 30-man field will compete in the Heartland ProRodeo Steer Roping Finals Oct. 13 at the Heart O’ Texas Coliseum in Waco. Action begins at 8 a.m. (CT). The lineup includes defending Heartland champion Cash Myers of Athens, Texas. Myers will be roping against 18-time World Champion Guy Allen of Santa Anna, Texas, along with two-time and defending World Champion Scott Snedecor of Uvalde, Texas. Nine-time World Champion Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, also is competing in the Heartland Steer Roping Finals. In fact, the entire Top 15 in the PRCA Steer Roping World Standings are among the contestants in Waco, so expect plenty of heated competition.

Naming a favorite is next to impossible with all that top talent. However, Allen is among those with a lot to gain. He is in 18th place in the world standings, and the Top 15 in the world standings after Waco will advance to the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping, Nov. 13-14, at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Okla. Allen is about $1,900 from the 15th spot. Myers, 13th in the world standings, also has ambitions of moving up to ensure a sixth NFSR qualification. Snedecor, with $61,839, leads the world standings by about $12,000 over Rocky Patterson in the No. 2 spot. A total of $32,000 is up for grabs in Waco. The format features four rounds with an average winner and no finals.

Team ropers Schwenke, Beers post 3.4-second run in Canadian Tour Finals

CALGAY, ALBERTA – Americans fared well in the Canadian Tour Championships, Oct. 2-4 at the Calgary Corral. However, Shane Schwenke and Mike Beers did a little something extra. The duo roped their steer in 3.4 seconds – believed to be the fastest recorded time in competition.

“Before they announced our time, I yelled at Mike, ‘How fast were we?’ said Schwenke, a header from Montana. “Mike laughed and said, ‘That was fast.’”

The two tied the Canadian record of 3.7 seconds in the semifinal round, but never dreamed they could be 3.4 in the same arena 45 minutes later.

“That 3.7 was the fastest I’d ever been in my life,” said Schwenke, 42, who was riding Canadian champion Murray Linthicum’s gray horse, Roller.

The PRCA-sanctioned world record of 3.5 seconds is shared by five teams and was most recently tied by JoJo LeMond and Randon Adams at the Buc Days Pro Rodeo, April 22, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

“I had an idea how fast it was, and it was the fastest I’d ever been,” said Beers, 51, from Oregon. “I mean, things happened so fast. We had a great steer. Shane did a great job, and I just kind of cleaned it up. It was awesome; we had a good time.”

Schwenke and Beers earned $5,000 apiece and are scheduled to compete in the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton next month.

In other events, Oregon’s Bobby Mote (bareback riding), Idaho’s Nate Baldwin (tie-down roping) and Texan Brittany Pozzi (barrel racing) also won Canadian tour titles. Canadians Cody Cassidy (steer wrestling), Justin Berg (saddle bronc riding) and Ty Elliott (bull riding) were the other Tour winners.

World champion bronc rider sweeps Dodge Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy demonstrated some of his world championship form by sweeping his event at the Dodge Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo, presented by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, Oct. 1-3. The 2007 world champion from Corona, N.M. swept the first, second and third rounds, to easily win the average with a score of 244 points on three head. Muncy’s top score was an 84-point ride on Salt River Rodeo’s Blueberry in the first round. He pocketed a total of $4,965 and had an opportunity to hone his skills heading into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 3-12, in Las Vegas. Prize money won at the circuit finals does not count toward the PRCA World Standings. However, Muncy, 22, is in 10th place in the PRCA World Standings and will be able to add to his 2009 earnings if he wins prize money at the Heartland ProRodeo Championships, Oct. 9-17 in Waco, Texas.

In other events, Jared Green of Socorro, N.M., won the bareback riding title. Wickenburg, Ariz., cowboy Dean McIntyre finished first in the average in the steer wrestling and the duo of Erich Rogers (Round Rock, Ariz.) and Cory Petska (Lexington, Okla.) claimed the rodeo’s team roping title. Tie-down roper Joseph Parsons of Marana, Ariz., barrel racer Kelsi Elkins of Aztec, N.M., and bull rider Rankin Lindsey of Hillsboro, N.M., were the other average champions. The average winners and year end qualifiers from the circuit finals advance to the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, April 7-10, 2010, in Pocatello, Idaho.

Plans under way for Pendleton Round-Up 2010 centennial celebration

PENDLETON, Ore. – Pendleton Round-Up Association members are getting ready for their 2010 centennial celebration by renovating the west grandstand bleachers and covering those 8,000 seats. The project also includes construction of booths to sell refreshments, as well as three additional sets of restroom facilities. The 2010 Round-Up is set for Sept. 15-18. Round-Up week festivities begin Sept. 11 with a parade and concert.

Advance tickets for the 2010 Round-Up are already sold out for Sept. 17-18, according to Round-Up Director Troy LeGore. Some additional tickets may be available in the spring if tickets are returned or if additional seating is found.

The Round-Up Association has a three-pronged approach to improving the four-day rodeo, which is held annually the second full week of September.

“First, two years ago, we really concentrated on making things better for the contestants,” said Randy Severe, Round-Up president. “This year, our focus was the volunteers, and we constructed a parking lot for their use. Now, we’re focusing on the spectators with this project and the Centennial Plaza, which will be totally complete by the 100th anniversary rodeo.”

In other Round-Up news, about $6,000 was raised for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund at the 2009 Cowboy Memorial Golf Tournament, held Sept. 14 in Pendleton, Ore. The Pendleton golf tourney has raised more than $90,000 since its inception.

“This is the 20th year that Pendleton has had a golf tournament to help raise money for JCCF, and we’re extremely appreciative,” said Cindy Schonholtz, JCCF program manager. “There is so much going on during Round-Up week, and the community still makes the time to come out and support this great event.”

A field of 56 entrants participated, and the team of Wayne McMeans, Steve Smith, Brian Brasburgh and Jack Cahlin finished first with a score of 58.

Team roping heeler Richard Durham of Morgan Mill, Texas, won the closest-to-the pin challenge. PRCA Supervisor of Pro Officials Tommy Keith finished first in the longest-drive contest. For more information on the JCCF, visit ProRodeo.com.

Also, about $20,000 was raised during the Wrangler Tough Enough To Wear Pink 2009 Pendleton Round-Up campaign. Pink-shirt day was on Sept. 17, and various activities were held to raise money, along with the auctioning of pink items.

The Trevor Brazile Watch

Nine-time World Champion Trevor Brazile can add to his trophy case and bank account when he competes in the Heartland ProRodeo Steer Roping Finals on Oct. 13 in Waco, Texas. Brazile finished fifth in the Heartland steer roping standings, which was only used to qualify contestants. Once in Waco, the slate is cleaned, and ropers will battle for $32,000 in total prize money.

Brazile, sixth in the steer roping PRCA World Standings, has the opportunity to use the Waco event to help him narrow the $30,000 lead Scott Snedecor has on him.

“It’s definitely an edge in the all-around (race),” said Brazile from Decatur, Texas, who won steer roping world titles in 2006 and 2007. “It’s also an edge in the steer roping (competition for a world title). With four head, it’s one of our better steer ropings all year. It’s nice to have (the Heartland finals in Waco) right here before the steer roping finals (Nov. 13-14 in Guthrie, Okla.).

With Brazile’s hectic schedule, he was unable to get to 30 Heartland rodeos and qualify for the Heartland ProRodeo Championships, Oct. 9-17, in the tie-down roping or team roping. So, after Waco, he will go to some fall rodeos, which will count for the 2010 season, before heading to Las Vegas for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 3-12.

“There used to be some off time before they raised the tie-down roping limit to 100 rodeos (for 2010),” Brazile said. “I guess the positive is that you’re not going into the Finals cold turkey. You’re not out of the rodeo groove.”

The NILE ProRodeo, Oct. 14-17, in Billings, Mont., is among those on Brazile’s 2010 schedule.

Three Elshere bronc riders to compete in Dodge Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo

MINOT, N.D. – Expect to hear the name Elshere announced several times in the saddle bronc riding at the Dodge Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo, presented by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, Oct. 8-11, at the State Fair Center in Minot, N.D. Brothers Ryan and J.J. Elshere, along with their cousin, Cole Elshere, will be among the contestants.

Ryan and J.J., along with an older brother and sister, grew up in Milesville, S.D., about 30 miles north of Philip. Ryan, 33, ranches outside Elm Springs, S.D., and J.J., 29, lives in Quinn. Cole, 20, grew up in Faith, S.D., and is a college student in Gillette, Wyo.

J.J. Elshere, who competes full-time, is a two-time Badlands Circuit champion and is in third place in the PRCA World Standings with only the Heartland ProRodeo Championships remaining in the 2009 season. J.J., who hopes to make the family proud, appears to be headed to his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 3-12, in Las Vegas. J.J. claimed the average title at the 2006 Wrangler NFR.

Along with competing and enjoying the circuit finals, the Elshere clan is using the event as somewhat of a family reunion. The cousins – Ryan’s three kids, ages 10, 6 and 2, and J.J.’s three boys, ages 7, 5 and five months – will have time to play together while their dads ride saddle broncs.

“The cousins have a good time,” J.J. said. “They’ll have a ball.”
