POCATELLO, Idaho -- OK, nobody is going to second guess Ryan Gray about his decision to delay knee surgery so that he could compete in the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, least of all Ryan Gray.
Gray won the Saturday night semifinal at Holt Arena on the Idaho State University campus and then came back to put a 90-point ride on Brookman Rodeo's Good Times in the final to capture the bareback riding title and a rodeo-best $19,978.
"I guess that should cover the cost of the surgery," Gray said.
Gray has at least one tear in the meniscus and some floating particles in his knee that cause it to lock up on him periodically, causing pain and swelling. It's an issue he's been dealing with since 2006, but he says it's gotten worse in the last 3-4 months and he knew it was time to go in and have the joint cleaned up.
He has tentative surgery dates set for April 20 or April 26 with Dr. Tandy Freeman in Dallas. Dr. Freeman will also take a look at some torn ligaments in Gray's hand as well.
"It's gotten to the point where it's affected my riding," Gray said, "and I've had to turn out of rodeos. I'm just kind of tired of messing with it. It's a simple surgery. I should be back competing in one or two weeks.
"I could have done it earlier, but it hasn't affected my riding lately, and I made a commitment to my circuit to come here and see what I could do."
What he did was put on a clinic. He was the model of consistency with rides of 84, 82, 85 and then the 90 on Good Times that was just one point off the arena record set by Cimmaron Gerke in 2004.
His finals' ride followed an 87-point performance by 2008 DNCFR champion Chris Harris on Kesler Championship Rodeo's Sunset Strip.
"I was totally focused on what I had to do, which was make the best ride I could," Gray said. "I came out in the (semifinals) and I didn't feel like I made a very good ride. I won the round, but I had the best horse out there (J Bar J Rodeo's Faded Charm). I messed up a couple of jumps, and so I was determined to come back and make a great ride. And I knew I had the horse to do that on."
Two was the magic number for steer wrestler Luke Branquinho and bull rider J.W. Harris. These two-time world champions each won their second consecutive DNCFR titles with dominant performances in Saturday night's double session.
Branquinho presented what was nearly a carbon copy of his win a year ago. He was just seventh in the average -- against sixth in 2009 -- but was 3.9 in the semifinals to finish second to Clay Cowan and then 3.9 again in the final to beat Cowan by seven-tenths of a second. Branquinho also won the 2009 final with a time of 3.9.
"It’s a great feeling to come back and win it again," Branquinho said. "To do that is amazing. I just bought a new horse called Spiderman from Lester Schomps out of Canada. I had a great hazer in Ken Lewis. It was perfect fit. I’m just glad it worked out again. I don’t safety up. In the first round I safetied up, and barely made it back to the semifinals. I knew that the second-round steers ran hard, so I made a run at the barrier. To be 3.9 twice in one night is amazing. I’m not sure what I’m doing with the ($20,000 voucher) from Dodge yet, but we’re going to dang sure use it…possibly a car for my wife or another truck for me."
After getting bucked off in the first round, Harris had a 90-point ride to win round two, another 90-pointer Saturday night on DNCFR bull of the year Little Bo from the Burns Rodeo string to win the semifinals and then topped that with 91 points on Rafter H Rodeo's Hot Wired in the finals.
"Any time you ride three bulls in a couple of days it’s a great feeling," Harris said, "but when you ride three and get scores of 90 and 91 it’s the best feeling in the world. Little Bo in the semifinals was a big ole wide sucker. His back is like a coffe table. He's probably the widest-backed bull I have ever been on. It makes him hard to get ahold of, so I decided to kick loose -- just go with his jumps and hope my hand stayed shut. I’d seen Hot Wired in an earlier round here (when he scored 87 points) and I’ve seen him around a few other rodeos. He’s a good bull; just the kind you want in a short round."
Tie-down roper Trent Creager worked his way through a field that had eight past Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers in it and secured the win with a time of 7.8 seconds in the finals.
By the time Creager roped in the semifinals, 2008 DNCFR champion Matt Shiozawa of nearby Chubbuck, Idaho, had already tied his two-year-old arena record with a 7.3-second run and so he backed off and settled for a solid run of 8.9 seconds to assure his place in the finals
"We had a pen of calves that was real strong and one pen that was weaker," Creager said. "They keep the pens pretty even. The final four calves were pretty even."
It took barrel racer Tammy Bruso four days to get to Holt Arena from her home in Dothan, Ala., and as arduous as the was at some points, you'll hear no complaints from her. Bruso, 49, saw snow for just the third time her life, saw some great scenery and met a lot of nice people. And, oh yeah, she won the DNCFR final in upset fashion with a time of 14.90 seconds for total earnings of $11,438.
Local favorite Sue Smith had been the odds-on favorite after twice breaking the arena record this week, including a 14.65-second run in the semifinals, but Smith hit a barrel in the final and finished fourth.
"It is like a dream come true," Bruso said. "I didn’t start barrel racing until I was 40 years old. It has been quite a ride. I am thankful for the great horse I have, and I appreciate the support that I have had from Ann Thompson who enters me everywhere. I just need to let this soak in for a while."
In three previous trips to the DNCFR, team roping heeler Paul Griemsman learned to keep things simple and the business-like approach that he and Badlands partner Brett Price assumed took them all the way to the title.
"We came with a game plan," Griemsman said, "to get the steers caught and make the finals. We decided in the finals to be as aggressive as we could, and see what happened. It all worked out according to our game plan. We’ve roped together for about two-and-half years, we get along great and we both train horses, so we have a lot in common."
Jesse Wright, the 2009 PRCA saddle bronc riding rookie of the year, won the DNCFR in his first try, posting an 87-point ride on Powder River Rodeo's Miss Congenialty.
In Country Television's coverage of the DNCFR finals will air April 24 and May 1 on DIRECTV channel 344 and DISH Network channel 230, with the announcing team of Larry Mahan, Rob Smets, Tim Fuller and Charli Wacker.
