CHEYENNE, Wyo.,-- Aug. 1, 2010 --Thirty-three years. That’s how long Bobby Harris has been trying to win a trophy saddle at the Daddy of ’em All.

He was just 15 years old when he started competing at Cheyenne Frontier Days, and three decades later had won nearly every major title in rodeo except this one. Harris had placed second in steer roping several times. He hadn’t come close to a team roping title since team roping became a part of the rodeo in 2001.

Harris, the 1991 world champion heeler from Gillette, Wyo., (now living in Highmore, S.D.) and his young partner Britt Williams of Hammond, Mont., entered the short round near the bottom of the pack, but a spectacular 8.2-second run won the round for them by nearly a full second and gave them a three-head time of 27.40 seconds. Harris and Williams tied with Arizona ropers Derrick Begay and Cesar de la Cruz for the coveted championship.

“I wanted to make the [NFR] again this year, so this is a dream come true,” said Harris, who celebrated by high-fiving not only Williams, Begay and de la Cruz, but also the pickup men in the arena. “And this is like my hometown rodeo – I have a lot of friends and family here.”

Harris was riding a borrowed gray gelding owned by John Philip of Washington, Texas, while Williams rode the trusty horse he first owned as a weanling.

“I’m giving my buckle to my dad for all he’s done for me, including finding me horses,” said Williams. “He never got a chance to rodeo.”

de la Cruz, who also won Cheyenne in 2006 with Colter Todd, was riding an 8-year-old bay mare with “huge run and a big stop” that he’s raised babies out of and uses at select rodeos. Williams and Harris earned $10,279, while Begay and de la Cruz went home with $10,550 apiece.

Arena records fell in Cheyenne, as saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss of Heflin, La., broke the 90-point record set by Ryan Mapston in 2004 and again in 2009 by Chet Johnson from Gillette, Wyo., with an outstanding 91-point effort on Harry Vold’s Painted Valley.

The bronc had formerly carried Billy Etbauer to the 89-point score that won him the 2009 Cheyenne championship, and recently packed Tyler Corrington to the same score for victory in Colorado Springs. The ride by DeMoss, who also won Cheyenne in 2004, was unbelievable even in slow motion instant replay, and earned him $13,119.

“That’s one of the nicest horses I’ve ever been on,” said DeMoss, who’d never previously drawn the great horse. “He got tapped off and just hung in the air there a little at the end. You can’t dream it any better than that.”

Bull riding champion Wesley Silcox , the 2007 world champion, notched 94 points on JK Rodeo’s Palm Springs to match the record set by Lynn Uptmore in 1999. Silcox was the only man to ride all three of his bulls. He earned $13,801 to go with his first title from the “Daddy”.

While world champs and veterans are usually most likely to win in Cheyenne, it was PRCA rookie Cody Moore who won the steer wrestling by three seconds with his final-round run of 9.4.

“I don’t even know what to say,” said Moore, 29. “I was just happy to be in the short round. “There are 185 great bulldoggers here, and to be part of this history for the rest of my life is awesome.”

Moore was riding a horse owned by Jace Melvin and trained by Allen Good, who also hazed for Moore. The champion is no newcomer to rodeo, despite his rookie status. He competed for Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, a decade ago and had been working for an oil and gas company in Artesia, N.M., until he quit in February to make rodeo his living.

Moore’s $21,888 was the most money won at Cheyenne this year.

Another repeat champion in Cheyenne was Lindsay Sears of Nanton, Alberta, who split the short-round victory with a 17.70-second run and won the average over Sherry Cervi by just .15 seconds to earn $15,806 on the week. Kristie Peterson was the last to win a second Cheyenne barrel racing title in 1997.

Chance Kelton, a three-time NFR header, easily won the “Daddy’s” steer roping championship with his 17.2-second final run, worth $19,525 total. He hopes to qualify for his second straight NFSR, where he was the runner-up average champion last year.

Tie-down roper Clint Arave of Blackfoot, Idaho, just barely held off Cody Ohl to win the tie-down roping championship by a tenth of a second and bank $13,873, while Canadian timed-event hand Curtis Cassidy won his first-ever Cheyenne Frontier Days all-around championship, based on his $12,946 in the second round of tie-down roping and steer wrestling.

For the first time ever, Cheyenne Frontier Days offered a saddle bronc futurity in which stock contractors were invited to bring their 4- and 5-year-old broncs for use in the Rookie Bronc Riding, and they were judged separately.

Mosbrucker Rodeo’s broncs scored 350 total points, but averaged 38.88 points per out, giving them the $10,000 championship. Smith Rodeo placed second with their broncs averaging 36.71, followed by Frontier Rodeo at 36.6 and Burns Rodeo at 35.90.

Korkow Rodeo horses scored the most total points at 402, and also own the highest-marked bronc of the futurity – Vanilla Twist. The Paint mare scored 43 points, to edge Burns Rodeo’s Chugwater Blue and two Mosbrucker horses, Wrangler Moon and Bay Wars.

The 114th edition of the rodeo fielded 1,566 entries and paid out $941,946. The rodeo will celebrate its 115th anniversary on July 22-31, 2011.
