Team Ropers Set a New Canadian Finals Rodeo Arena Record

Edmonton, AB - Thursday, November 6 will be marked in the Canadian finals Rodeo history books with a new CFR team roping record set in front 12,915 specatators. The 3.7 seconds marked by Brandon and Mike Beers shaved .2 seconds off the previous record set by Schreiner and Wilson in 2005.

The second night of the CFR also proved that a great many people are, in fact, Tough Enough To Wear Pink.

During the Thursday night performance contestants donned pink clothing – and in some cases pink hair – to demonstrate their support for people who are facing, or are affected by, breast cancer. Last night’s tie-down roping leader, Tyson Durfey, who donates a portion of his yearly earnings to help fight breast cancer, was showcased on the infield before being joined by his torch-bearing fellow tie-down and team ropers. Other competitors, carrying pink lights, walked down through the stands of Rexall Place to also show their support to the cause. About $20,000 was collected throughout Rexall Place for breast cancer research, and West Canadian donated an additional $18,600.

In bareback competition, Davey Shields, Jr., Bashaw, Alta., posted an 84 to earn $9,619 on Vold Rodeo Ltd.’s Sweeny Todd.

Steer wrestler Baillie Milan who had a no time at last night’s rodeo, brought his steer down in 3.7 seconds.

Novice saddle bronc rider Rylan Geiger, Bracken, Sask., earned another $1,200, placing first for the second night in a row, scoring 79.5 on board Vold Rodeo Ltd.’s Nellie Kelly. Brother Kyreon Geiger came in second, ahead of Maple Creek Sask.’s Adam Gilchrist. Kamloops, B.C. novice bareback rider Denver DeRose scored 70 and earned $1,200 with the help of Peters and Sons’ Hot Banana. Boys steer rider Zeke Thurston, Big Valley, Alta., also added to his CFR earnings, pocketing $750, a mark of 76.5 and another first-place finish. Lonnie West, Cadogan, Alta., posted the only other qualifying ride of the evening, scoring 70. Tie-down roper Matt Shiozawa, Chubbuck, Ida., put himself on the leader-board in 7.3 seconds.

Pincher Creek, Alta., saddle bronc cowboy Dustin Flundra repeated last night’s winning performance, scoring his second 86 in a row. Ladies barrel racer Suzanne DePaoli, Longview, Alta., and her horse TJ placed first in 15.33 seconds. Bull rider Jody Turner, Cochrane, Alta., rode Peters and Sons’ Archie to 87.5 points and first place.

CFR continues until November 9.
