ODESSA, Texas - Consistency is the mark of superiority for many athletes.
For Andy Burelle and Dusty Tuckness, their consistency paid off Thursday night in the fourth round of the Professional Bullfighters Daisy Protection Bullfight World Finals at the Ector County Coliseum.
“If you look at our scores, all four are about the same,” said Burelle of Ardmore, Okla. “We had a game plan when we came in here and that was to be as consistent as possible.
“Consistency wins championships.
Representing Team Cavenders, the two scored 78 points to win the round, nine points better than Team Buster’s Well Service, Lance McIlvain of Arlington, Texas, and Wacey Munsell of Ulysses, Kan.
“Before we got out there tonight, we talked about being consistent,” said Tuckness of Meeteetse, Wyo. “You see that stays with you and that the most consistent team throughout the year tends to win these events.”
Tuckness and Burelle have been locked in a tight battle with Steve Wangler and Jay Brewer for the world championship. Wangler and Brewer – representing Team Mann Creek Buck-N-Bulls – finished third in Thursday’s round.
“We didn’t really have anything in the bulls we drew that we could get a lot of points on, so we focused on getting as many grabs as possible,” Burelle said, referring to the method of controlling the animal by getting hands on it during the fight.
