Nunes takes lead in PBR world title race

LAS VEGAS (October 24, 2010) - Scoring 89 points on SoulJa Boy (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in front of a sellout crowd of 16,878, Renato Nunes of Buritama, Brazil, moved into first place in the Built Ford Tough world standings after Round 4 of the 2010 Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough World Finals on Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The only rider to ride all four bulls in the Finals, Nunes is also in first place in the World Finals event race, with 356.25 points. For the fourth straight day, he gained ground in the race for the World Championship and $1 million, moving past Austin Meier of Kinta, Okla., who is 118.25 points behind. The 2010 PBR World Champion will be the rider with the most Built Ford Tough Series points accumulated during the regular season and the World Finals.

Round 5 will be at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the Built Ford Tough Championship Round, featuring the Top 15 riders in the event. The crowning of the World Champion will be televised on NBC at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Two-time PBR World Champion Chris Shivers of Jonesville, La., is in second place in the event with 264.25 points, followed by Dustin Elliott of North Platte, Neb., with 263.5 points. Rookie of the Year candidate Wesley Lourenco of Santo Antonio da Barra, Brazil, who was bucked off for the first time in the Finals, is in fourth place with 263.25 points, and 2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi of Leme, Brazil is fifth with 261.25 points.

Robson Palermo of Rio Branco, Brazil, won Round 4 with 90.5 points on Hustlin (D&H Cattle Company). Palermo injured his neck while dismounting and is doubtful for Round 5. X-rays showed that he did not suffer a fracture. He is undergoing an MRI to evaluate for ligament tear.

Marchi finished second in the round with 90 points on Priceless (D&H Cattle Company/L&E Bulls) while Nunes, Shivers, Pete Farley of Kempsey, Australia, and Sean Willingham of Summerville, Ga., tied for third with 89 points.

The Finals consist of six rounds of competition. The first five rounds feature all of the riders matched against the toughest bulls. The scores from the five rides will be combined, and the Top 15 riders will advance for an additional round of competition, following the completion of Round 5 on Sunday, Oct. 24.

Injury Report: X-rays on Robson Palermo’s neck showed that he did not have a fracture. He will undergo an MRI to evaluate for ligament tear. He is doubtful for Round 5. Wiley Petersen has a sprained left shoulder and is questionable for Round 5. Kody Lostroh has a concussion and is out for Round 5. He will be replaced by alternate Caleb Sanderson of Kissimmee, Fla.
