Kansas City, Mo.: (October 16, 2009) A Western Weekend is planned for the American Royal celebration in Kansas City October 22-25.
Four days of everything western: rodeo, country music concerts, horsemanship clinics, and more, will take place at Kemper Arena in conjunction with the American Royal.
The experience kicks off with two nights of pro rodeo, October 23-24, with concerts by Pat Green following the October 23 rodeo and Sara Evans following the October 24 rodeo. Rodeo and concert tickets begin at $15.
The rodeo features the top 100 cowboys and cowgirls from Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. With more than $100,000 on the line, champions will be crowned for the Prairie Circuit, pro rodeo’s regional championship.
The Unbelievable Horse Happenings and trade show takes place October 22-25 at Hale Arena. It includes the Midwest’s largest open horse show and a Four Day Colt Challenge Competition, featuring equine experts Cal Noyons, Cindy Branham, and Kerry Kuhn.
Opening event activities begin Thursday, October 22 at 7 pm with a presentation by equine nutrition and health experts. An equine clinic by Kerry Kuhn will follow at 7:45 pm. entitled Practical Horsemanship – Overcoming Obstacles on the Trail. Kuhn is the official clinician on the popular RFD-TV series, “The Best of American by Horseback”, and has held public clinics in numerous states. These events are open to the public.
Western activities continue the following weekend, Friday, October 30 and Sunday, November 1, with the Championship Bull Riding (CBR) World Finals at Kemper Arena. World champion bull rider Tuff Hedeman, president of the CBR, brings a two hour show and an adrenaline rush with the top 40 bull riders competing for a total purse of $300,000 and the title of 2009 CBR World Champion.
Rodeo and western personalities will visit Kansas City on October 31 for the Chairman’s Championship Cowboy Days. Speakers include rodeo legends such as Roy Cooper, five time World Champion Calf Roper, Larry Mahan, six time World Champion All-Around Cowboy, Sherri Cervi, 1994 and 1999 World Champion Barrel Racer, Walt Woodard, two time World Champion Team Roper, Gary Leffew, bull riding guru, and a guest appearance by Tuff Hedeman, 1995 Pro Bull Riders World Champion. Cost for the Chairman’s Cowboy Days is $25, with proceeds benefitting the American Royal Scholarship Fund.
