Thunder EquiGames Over the Top

LAS VEGAS - The Thunder EquiGames advertisements were pretty catchy. In bold letters they said “Bulls” “Ropes” “Guns” “Barrels” “Glory”, but it wasn’t real clear what the EquiGames were all about until announcer Bob Tallman explained.

Tallman’s description December 13th was straight and to the point, “EquiGames is the cowboy version of the X Games, and in the next two hours we will give away over $3 million dollars. That number has been developed in just 30 months, and equals 60% of the total 10-day Wrangler National Finals Rodeo payout that has been in the works for fifty years,” Tallman said.”And, we aren’t done yet. Tomorrow we conclude with the Speed Williams Invitational that will pay out over$100,000 in its beginning year.” The large crowd exiting the arena had no doubt what they had witnessed after the two hour performance.

Ropes -

Hosted by Michael Gaughan’s South Point Equestrian and Events Center, World Series of Team Roping is the center piece of the EquiGames boasting a cash pay-off of over $2,867,000 and another quarter of million in prizes. There were three full days of preliminary action in three divisions, #13, #11 and #10. The top 15 in each division advanced to the Grand Finale. The Speed Williams Invitational Pro Match ended the roping activities on Sunday December 14th.

Team roping action started with the Bloomer Trailers ( #10) World Series Lo-Am Finale. George Ortega, a restaurant owner from Marana,Ariz., and Gerardo Valenzuela, a ranch hand from Sahuarita, Ariz., held onto their first place callback position, to split $160,000 with a time of 39.71 on four steers.

Arizona also took home the titles in the Priefert (#11) World Series Amateur. Daniel Nowlin a dairy farmer from Casa Grande did the heading for Bob Ferguson, a horse trainer and farrier from Eloy. They had a total time of 37.15 to win $160,000. The win didn’t come easily. Two weeks before the competition Ferguson was roping, he caught his foot on a rail, twisted it backwards and broke his ankle. He had to convince his doctor that he needed to rope. They put a cast on it and he had a special stirrup made to accommodate the cast.

The big winners in the Cactus Ropes (#13) World Series Pro-Am Finale were rancher Jared Udy from Newton, Utah, and construction company owner Ky Oberg from Ephraim, Utah. Udy knew exactly what it was like to rope for big money as he won the #11 World Series of Team Roping in 2007. Udy and Oberg roped four steers in 34.93 for the win and to split $150,000.

Barrels -

The Charmayne James Invitational Barrel Race came together in just four short weeks and featured 32 top horses and riders competing for $40,000 in prize money and a fancy aluminum Bloomer horse trailer. James designed the event so that competitors with top open horses could compete for huge payoffs under the lights of Vegas. Following the race James announced that entrants in 2009 will be limited to the first 100 . “Our goal is to step the payoff up to over $100,000 next year and I have no doubt that we can do it,” she said.

Krystal Jones from Mission, Texas, came to Vegas to win the event with a total time of 30.675 seconds on two runs. She earned $15,000 and the Bloomer trailer. She made her first run the morning of the 13th and found herself in third place in the first round. The ten fastest times made their second run during the Thunder EquiGames Grand Finale that afternoon. The remaining barrel racers had their second appearance that morning. When it was all said and done, Jones was atop the leader board and crowned the champion.

Finishing second was Norma Wood from West Jordan, Utah, with a total time of 30.74. Wood also won the second round and earned a total of $12,000. Nancy Hunter, an emergency-room nurse from Neola, Utah finished third with a total time of 30.767 and won $6,000.

Guns

The cowboys and cowgirls associated with The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) asked to be a part of Thunder EquiGames to showcase their competition. The events are big and getting bigger by the day, but few in the mainstream cowboy world had actually seen it. The CMSA brought in a group of their top competitors to thrill the crowd at South Point and compete for over $55,000 in prize money. Friday evening preliminary rounds paid over $27,000. Saturday's event featured the best seven from ladies and men’s divisions after CMSA's preliminary runs from the night before. The crowd loved the speed, color and excitement of the event. Whitney Vickers, Manchester, Tenn., captured the top spot in the Grand Finale for the Ladies and Jimmy Allen, Spokane, Mo., finished with the fast time for the men. Top money earners at the World Series of Mounted Shooting for the ladies were Kenda Lensiegne, Ellensburg, Wash., who took home $8,718.00 followed by John Clark, Morrison, Tenn., who took home $7,630.

Bulls

The Rob Smets Freestyle Bullfight Challenge was a great finishing touch for the first Thunder EquiGames and what a match. The bullfighters originally scheduled to fight were Dusty Tuckness from Meteetse, Wyo., Ross Hill from Muscle Shoals, Ala., Wacey Munsell from Ulysses, Kan., and Andy Burelle from Wilson, Okla. At the last minute, Tuckness’s contract as an alternate at the NFR was activated and he was replaced by Toby Inman, Davis Junction, Ill. Lawrence Borba brought in an outstanding set of fighting bulls from California that gave bullfighters a chance to showcase their skills and thrilled the crowd.

Hill electrified the crowd with his close contact to the bull and took home the $10,000 with a score of 90. “This was a great event and a great win,” Hill said. “This makes me hopeful for the future of freestyle bullfighting and I’m proud to be a part of it.” Hill was not alone in his hope for the future as all of the bullfighters have requested an invitation for 2009.

The Match

The final event of Thunder EquiGames was the Speed Williams Invitational Match Roping where Luke Brown from Rock Hill, S.C., and Ryan Motes from Weatherford, Texas, finished atop the leader board and won $50,000. The Match format was scheduled on Sunday to accommodate the ropers that qualified for the NFR. The premise in the Match is that head to head matches are the way to loosen up what pro ropers have come to know as a “knife fight” between equally talented ropers on a weekly basis. It appears that Speed got everyone’s attention as Brown and Motes won “The Match” by simply besting six other teams. A lot of eyebrows were raised as time and again big name ropers seemed to get caught in no-mans land between going fast and practice pen roping. The $136,000 pot was a great start for a concept that is sure to find its legs in the coming years.

“I thought the match went really well,” Williams said. “We saw some teams that had good luck and bad luck. After 10 days of roping one head at the NFR, this was a change of pace. We are looking forward to the New Year and developing the concept.”
