LAS VEGAS -- Nothing cures what ails a cowboy more than winning. Just ask steer wrestler Lee Graves and saddle bronc rider Jesse Kruse. Both cowboys gritted their teeth through the pain of nagging injuries to earn Round 4 victories at the 51st Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in front of 17,069 at the Thomas & Mack Center Sunday night.
Graves, the 2005 world champion, has been wrestling with considerable back pain in addition to the steers at this year's Wrangler NFR, but he "cowboyed up" to earn the top spot in the fourth performance. The Calgary, Alberta, bulldogger stopped the clock in 3.4 seconds, two-tenths of a second faster than Todd Suhn, to earn the $17,139 first-place check.
"I just compete against the steer and try to get a good start and make a good run, and those results happen," Graves said. "You’ve got to be optimistic for sure, but when you start thinking about it and trying to be fast, you beat yourself. You don’t do anything different from the night before, but things just roll your way."
The win pushed Graves past two-time and reigning World Champion Steer Wrestler Luke Branquinho in the PRCA World Standings and into the Wrangler NFR average lead with a four-head time of 15.7 seconds. Graves leads Branquinho by $12,328 in the world standings heading into the fifth performance.
Graves said it's not difficult for him to avoid thinking too much about the battle he's in for the steer wrestling gold buckle.
"With age and being here quite a few times – I mean, it’s there. If it wasn’t there, I’d be lying to you. But at the same time, when you get ready to compete, you look to draw a good animal to compete on, and then you just come down and try to win something. The rest of it takes care of itself."
Kruse, of Great Falls, Mont., is riding with what he believes is a fractured bone in his left foot, as well as a sore left knee, at this year's Wrangler NFR, but the injuries didn't keep him from winning Round 4 with a thrilling 90-point ride on Calgary Stampede's Hell's Half Acre. The Wrangler NFR rookie added $17,139 to his PRCA World Standings lead, which has grown to nearly $35,000 over Heith DeMoss ($148,576-$113,928).
"It feels great to win a round at the NFR after all the trouble I had in the first three rounds," Kruse said. "It was really important. A guy can pretty easily get to doubting himself, but you just have to stay positive. It sure makes my injury (to my left foot) feel a lot better."
Taos Muncy, the 2007 world champion who won Round 1, was second with an 88.5-point score and crossed the $100,000 mark in season earnings as a result. Shaun Stroh's third-place finish in the round put him atop the four-head Wrangler NFR average standings with 324.5 points.
"Shoot, all of those contractors had great horses out tonight, and Calgary Stampede has amazing horses," Kruse said.
The other world standings lead change of the night came in the team roping, where a fifth-place check put header Luke Brown ahead of 2007 World Champion Chad Masters. Brown, of Rock Hill, S.C., leads Masters $133,086-$130,513, while his partner Martin Lucero ($118, 633) trails Masters' partner Jade Corkill by $2,408 in the heeling standings.
Brown and Lucero lead the Wrangler NFR average standings with a four-head time of 19.6 seconds.
Travis Tryan and Michael Jones tied Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn for the round victory with a 3.7-second run, with each cowboy pocketing $15,343 in the process. The win was the second consecutive round triumph, and the money made Tryan the PRCA's 82nd million-dollar cowboy with $1,010,017. His older brother Clay also joined the $1-million club this season.
"Tonight was a little more under control," Tryan said. "We finally got into the re-runs on the steers, and we knew that steer wanted to go to the right. Michael was still able to keep him straight, and I didn't have to throw as far as last night. That steer was really heavy, and I was able to pull him just enough for Michael to heel him, and it worked out really well."
Things also worked out well for Sartain and VonAhn.
"We had a steer that Luke Brown had earlier in the week, and he weaved around some with him, so I was trying to get a really good start and get him before he had a chance to start weaving," Sartain said. "I thought I might have broken the barrier when I took off, but I was just gonna go at him anyway. I ended up getting a great start, and it worked out great for us."
Five-time World Champion Tie-Down Roper Cody Ohl has thrilled crowds in Las Vegas since he began competing at the Wrangler NFR there in 1994, and he didn't disappoint in Round 4. The Hico, Texas, cowboy won the round with a rodeo-best 6.6-second run, a mark that was just one-tenth of a second off his Wrangler NFR record from 2003 and three-tenths of a second off Ricky Canton's world record.
Ohl knew he had a good chance to be fast on the calf.
"Hunter Herrin had him the first round," Ohl said. "He roped him and figure-eighted the back leg. He still had a little heck, but he tied him in 9.7, so I knew I had a good calf. I knew he started sharp, so I knew I could take the bare minimum start, and it was just flawless tonight."
Ohl finished a full second ahead of second-place Blair Burk to earn the $17,139 first-place check and move to ninth in the PRCA World Standings. Clint Robinson, who trails Trevor Brazile by less than $8,000 in the world standings after winning an event-best $37,965 thus far, leads the Wrangler NFR average with a four-head time of 31.8 seconds.
Ohl was the first of the 15 tie-down ropers in the roping order in Round 4.
"You know, you get tied up in some of the rounds and watching some of the times," Ohl said. "I've had great luck going first. I really don't like it, because sometimes I feel like I'm rushing into it. Tonight, everything just felt great riding in the box. Shoot, I don't know, every time I've been first out of 15 times, I've probably won that round six or eight times. So, it's pretty comfortable going first. But I was to the point where I was roping really well the first three rounds, but I hadn't won anything. My confidence was still high, but I just didn't have any luck on the ground. Everything just happened perfectly tonight."
No bull rider has been more consistent than Bobby Welsh, who remained perfect in Las Vegas by securing his fourth straight qualified ride. The Gillette, Wyo., cowboy is the only bull rider to have covered all four of his bulls and won Round 4 with an 89.5-point mark on Silverado Rodeo's Silent Image. The first-place prize pushed Welsh's Wrangler NFR earnings to an event-best $40,637, and he leads the average race with 315.5 points.
"I just came to ride bulls," said Welsh, who completed the stellar ride even though his bull rope was sliding through his hand toward the end. "It was by the grace of God because that bull got the rope out of my hand on the first jump. My hand was almost halfway open the entire time. In my book, when you get a covered ride, you're the winner."
Welsh finished a half-point ahead of 2006 World Champion and Round 2 winner B.J. Schumacher, who ended the unridden streak of Smith, Harper & Morgan's Smilin Bill. Welsh's win moved him to second place in the PRCA World Standings with $133,436, $85,838 behind reigning World Champion J.W. Harris, who sat out his second consecutive round with a broken bone in his right (riding) hand. Harris will attempt to ride with the injured hand in Round 5.
Round 3 winner Douglas Duncan was the only other bull rider to record a qualified ride during the fourth performance, and he stands second in the Wrangler NFR average behind Welsh with a 256-point total on three head.
Bareback rider Royce Ford has made a habit out of winning rounds at the Wrangler NFR, and he picked up another victory in Round 4 thanks to an 87-point mark on Three Hills Rodeo's Peaches and Cream. The score was the highest bareback ride of this year's rodeo thus far and moved Ford to ninth in the PRCA World Standings and second place in the four-head average with 335.5 points.
"She’s a great horse," Ford said of Peaches and Cream, which carried Bobby Mote to a Round 9 win at last year's Wrangler NFR. "Horses like that, when they come around like that in a circle, especially when it’s into your hand, they almost pick you up and send your feet higher. For a bareback rider, that’s exactly what you want. My cousin Heath had been on her and told me about her. He said she was the one to have, and he was right."
Ford had an ailment of his own to overcome in Round 4, saying his riding (right) hand was sore after being wrenched by Big Bend Rodeo's Holly Time in the third performance. Some ice from the Justin Sportsmedicine room, along with a cold celebratory Coors, helped ease the pain for Ford.
Kaycee Feild leads the average race with 342 points and has won an event-best $37,965, while Ford has earned $30,224 through four rounds.
Cassie Moseley ended the round victory streak of barrel racing world champions by taking Round 4 with a rodeo-best 13.72-second time. Moseley, of Farwell, Texas, stopped the winning streak of World Champions Brittany Pozzi, Lindsay Sears and Sherry Cervi, who won the first three rounds, respectively.
"Finally! When he (Mitey Man) came off the first barrel, I knew he was firing," said Moseley, who is competing in her second consecutive Wrangler NFR. "When I can't remember my run barrel by barrel, I know that he is really running. I was a bit down when he didn't seem to work that well in the previous perfs, and I had to work on myself to not let it affect things. I just tried to keep myself calm, and tonight it all worked out, and I am feeling really excited."
Sears, the reigning world champion, finished second in 13.76 seconds to earn $13,546 and close the gap on 2007 World Champion Pozzi. Even though she finished out of the money during the fourth performance, Pozzi leads the PRCA World Standings with $200,096, while Sears is second with $186,554. Sears leads the Wrangler NFR average standings with a four-run time of 55.86 seconds.
