Keylon’s upset win at Pendleton gives new life to Wrangler NFR dream

PENDLETON, Ore. – Jared Keylon did what he needed to do at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up to give himself a chance to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Now he’s got two long weeks of competition to see if can make his dream come true.

Keylon, 24, tied for second in the opening round of the bareback riding at Round-Up Arena and won the final round with an 85-point ride on Korkow Rodeo’s Cherry Velvet to win the average and earn checks for $9,069.

It brought his season total to $50,460, more than doubling his career-high of a year ago and good enough to move him past Tim Shirley into 16th place in the PRCA World Standings. Keylon trails Jason Havens for the final qualifying spot into the Wrangler NFR by slightly more than $1,000.

“I’m going home (Fort Scott, Kan.) to see my wife (Ashley) for a day and hit the road again,” Keylon said. “I’m going to Texarkana (Ark.) on Wednesday, Amarillo (Texas) on Thursday and then Albuquerque (N.M.) Friday and Saturday. After that, I’m I qualified into the Heartland ProRodeo Championships in Waco, Texas (Oct. 9-17), which is really important since I didn’t make it to Omaha (Neb.) this week for the Justin Boots Championships.

“I’ve still got a lot of good people behind me (in the standings), so I know I’m still going to have to fight it out until the end. But I’m having a great time doing this.”

Keylon and his wife bought some land 15 miles west of Fort Scott earlier this year and are planning to build a house there, so Keylon has had “a whole lot of extra motivation” for wanting to establish himself among the elite level of bareback riders.

He showed he belonged this weekend when he went head-to-head with standings leader Clint Cannon, two-time World Champion Bobby Mote, three-time World Champion Will Lowe and four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Ryan Gray to win the biggest title of his career.

“The first time I saw Cherry Velvet, my traveling partner, Matt Bright, rode him for 80 points in Salinas (Calif.),” Keylon said. “Then Brandon Martin had an 83 on the horse in the long go in Pendleton. It’s kind of a young horse, but it’s getting better all the time, and I thought it would be pretty neat to draw Cherry Velvet in the finals. I thought I could handle it. I was excited for the chance.”

Keylon was second-to-last in the riding order, so he knew very well where things stood when he climbed down in the chute.

“I was breathing kind of hard,” he said. “When you’re up against guys like Ryan Gray, Bobby Mote and Clint Cannon, you need to have your rodeo pants on or you’re not going to have a chance. I was eager to get out there and ride before I started to hyper-ventilate or have a heart attack. I’m just glad it all worked out.”

Timed-event cowboy Josh Peek also did his Wrangler NFR chances some good at Pendleton, earning enough in the steer wrestling and tie-down roping to claim his first Let ‘Er Buck Trophy as the rodeo’s top all-around hand.

Peek had total earnings of $6,053 to go with the trophy, a saddle, buckle and several items from Pendleton Woolen Mills.

The $4,233 he won in tie-down roping allowed him to gain a little breathing room in the Wrangler NFR chase; Peek had arrived at Pendleton in 15th place.

“It’s amazing,” Peek said. “It’s a cowboy’s rodeo. It’s a dream of mine. I’ve always wanted to win Pendleton.”

Other winners at Pendleton were steer wrestler Olin Hannum (16.7 seconds on three head), father-son team ropers Joel and Allen Bach (21.2 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell (174 points on two head), tie-down ropers Jerrad Hofstetter and Matt Shiozawa (33.7 seconds on three head), barrel racer Linzie Walker (56.54 seconds on two runs) and bull rider Colin McTaggart (175 points on two head).

It was Walker’s fourth consecutive victory at Pendleton.

The Trevor Brazile Watch

Trevor Brazile won the tie-down roping in 8.0 seconds at the Eastland County ProRodeo in Ranger, Texas, and placed in a round of team roping with Patrick Smith at the Pendleton Round-Up for earnings of $3,465 from Sept. 18-20. In El Paso, Brazile claimed the all-around by tying for third place in the tie-down roping and tying for sixth in the second round of team roping with Smith. All total, Brazile won $937 at the Southwestern International PRCA Rodeo, which concluded Sept. 20. The paydays brought his season total to $227,362 ahead of the total he had on the same week in 2007 ($215,768), on his way to the single-season earnings record of $425,115.

Brazile, of Decatur, Texas, is qualified in both team roping and tie-down roping for this week’s Justin Boots Championships in Omaha, Neb., where there is prize money of nearly $800,000.

Cannon wraps up the Big 4 title

Bareback rider Clint Cannon used another solid week at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up to clinch the coveted “Big 4 Award,” given to the high-money earner at the rodeos in Walla Walla, Wash.; Lewiston, Idaho; Ellensburg, Wash.; and Pendleton. Cannon won the first round at Pendleton and finished sixth in the average to earn $5,193 for the weekend, which kept him atop the Big 4 standings after wins at Lewiston and Walla Walla. He received a $5,000 bonus check with the award.

The bonus money does not count toward the PRCA World Standings. Cannon leads the PRCA’s bareback riding standings with $202,428 a regular-season earnings record for the event by more than $50,000.
