September sendoff: Ariat Playoff makes stop Number 3 in Omaha
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A star-studded field is headed to Omaha, Neb., as a total of 17 world champions with a combined 58 world titles highlight the 96-contestant field for the Ak-Sar-Ben River City Roundup, the third of four events of the $1.62 million Ariat Playoffs series.

Competitors in the Omaha Round of the Ariat Playoffs will compete for a share of the $400,000 purse when the three-day event starts Sept. 25 at the Qwest Center in downtown Omaha. It will be televised on Fox Sports Net in October. Check future PRCA News Releases and the ProRodeo Sports News for dates and times in your area.

Action takes place at 7 p.m. (CT) each night. All contestants compete the first two nights. The semifinals, which will feature the top eight competitors in each event after two rounds, get under way on Sept. 27, with the four-person final round immediately following.

Five-time and reigning World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile highlights the field. Brazile, who also claimed his first world title in tie-down roping in 2007, is joined by two other reigning world champions in attendance this week in Omaha – bareback rider Bobby Mote of Culver, Ore., and team roping heeler Walt Woodard of Stephenville, Texas.

Omaha’s team roping lineup boasts five world champions, the most of any event. Eight-time world champion Speed Williams of De Leon, Texas.; seven-time titlist Jake Barnes of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and 2006 World Champion Matt Sherwood of Pima, Ariz., highlight the heading side, while world champion heelers Clay O’Brien Cooper of Morgan Mill, Texas; and Woodard will take aim at Omaha titles.

Three world champions headline the field in both bareback riding and saddle bronc riding, with each event’s reigning champion hoping to use Omaha as a springboard for a repeat world title.

The top 10 contestants in each event based on total Wrangler ProRodeo Tour points from the cumulative Wrangler ProRodeo Tour regular-season standings plus the three Ariat Playoffs rodeos qualify for the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Championship, presented by Texas Stampede, Nov. 7-9 in Dallas.

The Playoffs started in Caldwell, Idaho, with the top 35 contestants from the 26-city Wrangler ProRodeo Tour and each event champion from the 2008 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, presented by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco. After Caldwell, the field was whittled to the top 22 from the cumulative Tour standings, plus the Caldwell and DNCFR champs, as the top athletes headed for the second Ariat Playoff rodeo in Puyallup, Wash.

From there, the top 11 in the Tour standings and each event’s champion from Puyallup advanced to Omaha.
