FORT WORTH, Texas --- While they still have one more horse to get by at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, there are a trio of bareback riders that have put themselves in position to qualify for the finals here on Feb. 7.
Leading the pack are Kelly Timberman and Clint Cannon who are tied with 164 points on two head. At the Saturday matinee performance, they each had 83-point scores on horse from Frontier Rodeo. Timerman, the 2005 world champion, got on the horse named Cash Deal. Cannon broke every regular season record in the books in 2009 and finished as runner-up for the world title. He got on the horse named Harriot. These were the high-marked rides of the rodeo.
They got on their second of three horses at the Saturday night performance and again had identical scores of 81. This time it was horses from Carr ProRodeo that took them to 81-point efforts. Cannon got on Mike & Ike while Timberman was on Sierra Madre. There was one man ahead of them, Jeremy Mouton from Scott, La. Mouton was 83-points on Outa Sight. He had a previous score of 79.
All three of these men get on their third horse on Sunday afternoon in hopes of moving into the top 12 that qualify for the finals. The over-all category is currently lead by Kaycee Feild from Payson, Utah with 249 total points. In order to over-take the lead, Cannon or Timberman would have to score 86 points or better on Sunday afternoon.
While that is definitely a possibility with the talent and ability of these men, it is even more likely that they will move into the top 12. Mouton is also in good shape with 162 points. After Saturday morning’s performance, the eighth-place position has a total of 227 points. So, for any of these three to move into the top eight, they only need to have rides of 65 points or better.
“I had two really good horses today,” Cannon said. “I did pretty well here last year before the finals. Then the finals didn’t go my way at all. I’d sure like to have the chance to redeem myself and take home that Fort Worth buckle.”
There are now five bull riders that have qualified rides on two head and one of them took the over-all lead Saturday night. Dave Samsel from Stephenville, Texas, has a total score of 161 points to overtake Lucas Guilbeau from Mount Pleasant, Texas, who has 159.
Samsel also leads the second round thanks to his 87-point effort aboard Carr Pro Rodeo’s Cross Roads. He is a veteran bull rider who spent 10 years competing on the Professional Bull Riders tour. In 2005, he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and two years later qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. A Fort Worth title could put him well on his way to another trip to Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championship event.
There are two performances of the Worlds Original Indoor Rodeo on Sunday, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
