CALDWELL, Idaho --Aug. 20, 2010 – Bareback rider Kaycee Feild started the 2010 rodeo year off well winning titles in Fort Worth, Texas, and Rapid City, S.D., in February.
He continued to be successful and was sitting very well in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings when disaster struck. At the rodeo in Livermore, Calif., he broke his right arm, the one that he uses to get a grip on a bareback rigging to make a living.
After having surgery on his arm, Feild missed two months of competition. He worked with physical therapist Keith Klevin in Las Vegas who has helped many professional athletes return to competition.
Two months after the injury, Feild returned to competition at Logan, Utah where he shared the championship. Just a week later, he rode at the Caldwell Night Rodeo and scored 86 points on the Calgary Stampede horse named Kauai Coconut. It was the fifth bucking horse he has gotten on since returning to the rodeo arena.
That ride earned him $2,969 for a tie for first place in the first round. Kelly Timberman, from Mills, Wyo., also had an 86. They are both poised to win a championship here during Saturday night’s finals.
Another Wyoming cowboy that is in contention for a title here is Kanin Asay from Powell. Asay tied for first place in the first round here last year with world champion J.W. Harris from Mullen, Texas. They each won $2,988 for their 90 point efforts. Then, Asay couldn’t be at the final round because his brother had chosen to get married on the same day.
That won’t be a problem for the three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier this year. He won the first round here this year outright with an 84-point effort. He collected a check for $2,841.
“I was sick that I couldn’t be there last year,” Asay said. “I’m so thankful that I get to be there Saturday night this year.”
Friday night’s rodeo was part of Wrangler’s Patriot Night program. Over $10,000 was raised for Hero Care, a national program with a local chapter. The funds that Caldwell Night Rodeo raised will support local veterans and their families.
Also on Friday, governor C.L. “Butch” Otter roped with Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association commissioner Karl Stressman. Stressman put a clean catch on the head, but Otter failed to connect.
“We have a lot of rodeo days in our state,” Otter said. “Rodeo is very popular in Idaho. It’s family entertainment. It’s the only professional sport that we do every day at work. For ranchers it is a routine job. I would have loved it if I had caught tonight. It’s still fun to participate.
Saturday night’s final round starts at 8 p.m. All of the Caldwell Night Rodeo champions will be crowned at that time.
