College Rodeo Standouts at Top of Leader Board
CHEYENNE, Wyo. ---July 26, 2010--- Sam Spreadborough is originally from Australia but came to the U.S. to compete in college rodeo.
He has now made his home in Snyder, Texas, where he attended school at Western Texas College and qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) four consecutive years. Spreadborough is a talented bronc rider that showed rodeo fans he could compete with the best at the third performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. He had an 86-point ride on Harry Vold Rodeo’s horse named Fergie to take the lead in the first round of competition.
The saddle bronc riding here has been tough and will get tougher. With just two sets of contestants having made their first round appearance, it is already taking nearly 80 points to place. South Dakota’s saddle bronc riding world champions Chad Ferley and Jeff Willert also competed here Monday. They were 83 and 79 points respectively. Willert holds the eight place position with that 79.
In the bareback riding it was Caleb Bennett from Bluffdale, Utah, that took the lead. Bennett, a Utah Valley University student has made the trip to Casper, Wyo., to compete at the CNFR for the past three years. He is hoping for his fourth in 2011. Bennett got on a horse named Up the River owned by J Bar J Rodeo and scored 81.
Tie-down roper Tuf Cooper has the fastest time at the rodeo so far with a 12.2 run here in the first round. Cooper has placed here the past two years and would like nothing better than to win his first Cheyenne Frontier Days Championship buckle this year.
Team Roping has a tie for first place in the round with two 8.2-second runs. Delon Parker from Worden, Mont., and Justin Viles from Cody, Wyo., along with brothers Brady and Riley Minor are the best here so far.
Lindsay Sears, the 2008 Cheyenne Frontier Days barrel racing champion took the lead in the second go round and the over-all standings. She was riding her great horse Martha and stopped the clock in 17.40 seconds, the fastest run of the rodeo here to date. She has a total time of 35.24 and is over one-fourth of a second faster than the woman in second place, Sue Smith from Blackfoot, Idaho.
All of these contestants, with the exception of Sears will compete here again on Tuesday. The Minor brothers will be in slack while everyone else will be in the fourth performance, which begins at 1 p.m.
