Cord and Jet McCoy, “The Amazing Race”

The experiences of traveling the rodeo trail might have paid a huge dividend for Cord and Jet McCoy on the second leg of “The Amazing Race.”

A little cowboy ingenuity and a lot of luck boosted the McCoys to first place in the episode that aired Sunday, Feb. 1, on CBS-TV. Jet and Cord are one of nine remaining teams in the worldwide race that airs weekly, and they got to take advantage of their rural roots along the path that wound through Chile.

While other teams looked at getting from their starting point to their next stop via direct bus trip, the McCoys found a bus line that offered a one-stop route but that got them to the destination hours sooner. In fact, Jet and Cord slept in their vehicle while the other teams rode their buses through the night.

When Cord said the tandem “snuggled” in their warm car, Jet reminded his brother, “Snuggle might be the wrong word.”

As their trail opened the next morning, rain fell. Cord adorned his hat with a makeshift rain cover, and as the two trudged up the path, Cord said, “Rain will cover up our foot prints.” Well, maybe.

Their trek led them to a special celebration involving llamas, where the teams had to dress the animals in a scarf and blanket. Ever so astute with animals, the brothers seemed to get their llama decorated quickly and were off to their next adventure. Jet was dubbed “The llama whisperer.”

They also helped collect the ingredients for a local fare, including gathering eggs from a chicken coup and milking a cow. If it all seemed quite familiar to the cowboys, it was awfully country.

By being first to the second-episode pit stop, the land-locked cowboys won a sailboat. That could work just fine for one of the many lakes in windblown Oklahoman, but how will it be put to use on McCoy Ranches near Tupelo?

It doesn’t rightly matter. The cowboy hats, and the cowboys that wear them, continue on “The Amazing Race.”
