About Joan Saltel
Joan Elizabeth Saltel was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Joan started dancing at age three, and she knew right away that dancing was what she wanted to do. She started dancing professionally at the age of six, sometimes doing four and five shows a day in Vaudeville on her Easter and Christmas holidays from school. She danced at various fairs and festivals, and also did shows for the troops during WWII during her summer vacations.

Joan came to the USA working with the Ruloff Trio, an Adagio Ballroom act. She worked fairs and festivals with this act, and then even clubs - including Leon & Eddies in New York, McVans in Buffalo, and The Last Frontier in Vegas.

Joan ended up in Kansas City, where the Ruloff Trio was headquarted. She eventually left this trio and went out on the road with a new show. During this show in Wichita, KS, a promoter by the name of Harry "Hap" Peebles came to the hotel to see her tap act. He asked her if she would like to do his Cavalcade of Stars 10 Day Tour with Tony Paster, The Four Ladds, and The Chordettes. Joan ended up doing three of these tours with different stars. She even did Hap's Country Tour with Barbara Mandrell, Loretta Lynn, George Morgan, Bob Wills, Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, and many others.

Joan met her husband, Charles, doing a show at The Music Hall in Kansas City. Charles was a hand-balancing act with The William Morris Agency. Charles ended up in law school, and married Joan while she was working at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. Joan became the first inside woman Claim Adjuster in Kansas City. Still dancing at night and on weekends, Joan worked for Liberty Mutual for 10 years. During this time, she gave birth to her daughter, April and son, Bill.

Joan danced her last tap show at The Arkansas State Fair, with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and LeRoy Van Dyke. The fair stage was cement, and Joan knew then that it was time to hang up her tap shoes. It was a very hard thing for her to do.

Hap Peebles then asked her to help him work his fair conventions. Joan had just danced at many of these fairs, so she already knew the fair managers. She went to work for Hap, and worked his fair conventions for 3 years. Joan had done many shows for Don Romeo, who was Vice-President of Buddy Lee Attractions at that time. Don introduced Joan to Buddy Lee. Joan started working for BLA in 1974 at the ICMBA convention, which is now IEBA. She worked for BLA on a per-convention basis during her first year, and she was later added to the payroll. She has now worked for BLA for 35 years.

To date, Charles has had a successful law practice. Their son, Bill, has now taken over the Law Firm, and is married to Robin - also a lawyer. Her daughter, April, is in the Real Estate business, and is also married to a lawyer named Gary. Charles still works every day. Joan and Charles are blessed now to have 5 grandchildren.
