Country Music Singles Reviews

Tim McGraw, Little Big Town, Kellie Pickler and Craig Morgan

Tim McGraw : Nothin' To Die For
My Pick of the week.

Full marks to Tim McGraw for having the balls to tackle a subject which so many ignore.

Drink Driving is a killer. Congressmen and their counterparts worldwide seem to think they can set a "safe limit".

Let me tell you what the safe limit is. Nil, none, no drink, don't do it!!

The music is mediocre, McGraw's vocals are supremely professional but completely unfeeling which is typical of a pop singer trying to do Country music.

The track gets my pick of the week award because it has a valuable message.

Craig Morgan : God Must Really Love Me

Craig Morgan has the potential to be a great. He seems to pick decent material, he has a brilliant voice.

This is a good song, and it will chart.

But he can do so very much better.

Kellie Pickler : Best Days Of Your Life

Now, let's see: how do we make a "Country" record?

We take some blonde kid from out of no-where who can hold a note, a bunch of guys who can play rock and roll guitars and some quasi-meaningful lyrics.

Now we wind up the compression so that the song is as loud as we can get it. And then, we SELL it.

"Does that mean it's a Country song, son?"

No grandpa, that means it's what New York and LA think of as Country.

"And will it be a hit?"

Oh yes, huge. As it fades out, Pickler screams (rather than sings): "It's a shame!"

Now ain't that the truth?? Horrendous!!!!!!

Little Big Town : Good Lord Willing:
(MY PICK OF THE WEEK)

Man, oh man, who teaches these guys how to play guitar.  Look, I love Chuck Berry music. I even like some real original punk music.

But that DOESN'T mean every "Country" song has to have heavy metal thrash as the backing.

On here, if you listen closely, you'll realize there's a banjo, maybe some dobro. So why HIDE them??

The only reason I can think of is that these people are ASHAMED of the genre to which they claim their music belongs.

It's better than Pickler's shameful offering, but only by a whisker.
