Alan Jackson : Good Time

There's a fundamental flaw to Alan Jackson's new single: it's based on a false premise - that Alan Jackson NEEDS to work for a living!

I know that once, before he made it, he probably did clock on to work. But, my good friends, Alan Jackson DOESN'T punch a clock when he starts work - he doesn't even NEED to work! If he wanted, he could stop work right now and be rich the rest of his life.

So claiming he wants to take a break and have a good time is - to be kind - disingenuous. At worst, it's taking the mickey out of the people who have made him rich, famous and wealthy beyond most people's dreams!

None of that would be a problem if it weren't for the fact that, for the first time that I can remember, Jackson sings a song like it's just words and music, not lyrics and feelings set to music.  Even on "Like Red On A Rose" - his last album which was a disaster in every sense - he managed to sound like he meant the songs.

Here, he MIGHT have got away with it if it hadn't been for Keith Stegall's clinical production. The song title, and the lyrics, suggest fun, but the music is so clean, so tidy, so neatly edited and arranged that it's completely lacking any real life.

My View: Second number one hit from the album of the same name!
