Many say Heidi Newfield WAS Trick Pony and certainly, her vocals helped make that brilliant group work. The world of Country music was stunned when she announced she was quitting to pursue a solo career.
But I have to say that her solo career may be short-lived if this is the best song she can come up with to launch it!
"Johnny And June" is a compendium of trite - and some would say tasteless - references to the late great Johnny Cash and June Carter-Cash.
You fear the worst as soon as the song opens with these, some of the corniest lines I've EVER heard!
"There's something 'bout a man in black,
"Makes me wanna buy a Cadillac,
"Throw the top back,
"And roll down to Jackson".
It gets worse with the chorus including strained references to "rings of fire" and "walk the line". Words fail me!
My View: Talented lady, appalling song and - MAYBE - a career hanging by a thread!
