The guys at Capitol are very edgy about their latest marketing ploy as they try to convince the world that Darius Rucker - former Hootie and The Blowfish front man - is now a Country singer!
They've offered "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" - to radio as a Country song.
Actually, they've dangled it in front of radio without allowing stations to download it before they contact the label. That is unheard of and we think we know why.
Jim Asker, one of "Country" Radio's top stats and promo men inadvertently hit on it when he said on his website: "It is undeniably Country, not just re-hashed Pop with fiddles added in for effect."
Now Jim would say that wouldn't he? Like most of "Country" radio's glitterati, he seems to live in the record label's pockets. If Capitol told him Darius Rucker was singing Gregorian Chant, he'd probably agree.
Well, let ME say it loudly: "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" AIN'T COUNTRY. It's a great song and Rucker is a great vocalist. But this is as close to Country music as Carrie Underwood or Rascal Flatts - a millions miles away.
And what the sad truth of all I've said? Well, "Country" radio, afraid of offending Capitol Records, and hearing what guru Jim says, will put this on their playlists. And my bet is, it'll be at number one on Billboard's Country chart soon after it's release.
My View: The first Country number one from Capitol Records' parallel universe!
