Reba wraps her tonsils around a brilliant ballad for her new single, but ALL the plaudits should go to my friend Skip Ewing.
Skip is one of Nashville's unsung heroes, a superb singer with a songwriting history to match any. He co wrote "Every Other Weekend" with Connie Rae Harrington, and it's a real heartbreaker.
On her album, "Duets", McEntire sings the song with Kenny Chesney.
This version outclasses that because Ewing sings it like he means it, while Chesney sings it on the album like he's watching the dollar signs ring up!
Truth is, some lines in this version of song brought tears to my eyes. Those lyrics got a little too close to home for comfort!! And in any great Country song, that's how it should be.
For me, the star here's not Reba's drawl or the huge orchestra in the background. It's the amazing song and the wonderful lyrics.
My View: Surefire number 1 - and doesn't Ewing deserve it!
