Probably the biggest news in recent weeks in the world of rodeo is the announcement by RodeoHouston that it would no longer be sanctioned by the PRCA.
The following is a quote from their website:
"Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ officials have announced that the 2011 RODEOHOUSTON BP Super Series will be an international invitational championship open to the top cowboys in all of rodeo. The women’s barrel racing event will be lead-sanctioned by the WPRA, and will be handled as in prior years." (Complete release: http://www.rodeohouston.com/rodeo/index.aspx).
There are many thoughts on the effect this move will have on the PRCA and the sport of rodeo in general. No longer will the "top competitors" be able to "punch their ticket to the WNFR" in Houston. This could give the smaller rodeos more competitors. This will also take a big paycheck out of the PRCA bank account. If this works for Houston will Denver and Cheyenne follow suit? Your opinion is welcome.
