Make time for ‘Daddy’: Summer
Tour spends week in Cheyenne;
Deadwood, Medicine Hat highlight
week
COLORADO
SPRINGS, Colo. –
The next stop of the Wrangler
ProRodeo Tour’s summer series
wraps up this weekend at the
Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, the
PRCA’s richest regular-season
rodeo with a purse of nearly
$800,000.
Action
commenced July 22, and daily
performances at 1 p.m. MT continue
through the culminating Wrangler
ProRodeo Tour Round on July 30.
The Cheyenne Frontier Days, known
throughout the rodeo world as the
“Daddy of ’em All,” is
giving cowboys and cowgirls their
fifth of 12 opportunities to earn
Wrangler Tour points in hopes of
qualifying for the ProRodeo Summer
Tour Finale, Sept. 28-30 in Omaha,
Neb. Only the top 12 contestants
in each event’s Wrangler Tour
standings following the final
Wrangler Tour stop in Albuquerque,
N.M., on Sept. 18 qualify for the
Tour Finale.
While Cheyenne is playing host to
the Wrangler Tour this week, other
rodeos in relatively close
proximity to Wyoming’s state
capital also can help fatten a
cowboy’s wallet.
The Deadwood (S.D.) Days of ’76
Rodeo, about a 300-mile drive
northwest of Cheyenne, starts July
27 and runs through July 30. The
rodeo, noted for its wooden
bucking chutes and old West
scenery, has been honored four
times as the PRCA’s Small
Outdoor Rodeo Committee of the
Year and is the two-time and
reigning Medium Rodeo Committee of
the Year.
Longtime stock contractor Jim
Korkow of Korkow Rodeos always
looks forward to supplying animals
for the event.
“It’s probably my favorite
rodeo,” Korkow said. “It has
one of the most beautiful
picturesque settings I’ve ever
seen. You take the bucking chutes
and the red rock wall canyon
backdrop and you’ll think so,
too.”
Up in Canada, the Medicine Hat
(Alberta) Stampede is playing host
to the eighth stop on the 11-city
Canadian Rodeo Tour from July 27
to July 29. The top two
point-getters in each event over
the course of the Tour earn
qualification to the 2006 Canadian
Finals Rodeo, Nov. 8-12 in
Edmonton, Alberta.

No hangers: Chads fare well in
Salinas
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It was
good to have the name Chad during
the 2006 edition of the California
Rodeo Salinas, the fourth stop on
the Wrangler ProRodeo Summer Tour.
Three of the event’s average
winners were named Chad.
Saddle bronc rider Chad Ferley
spurred his way to a sweep at
California Rodeo Salinas and rode
away with $8,814. Ferley, of
Oelrichs, S.D., tied for the win
in the first round with Cody
DeMoss after posting an 83-point
ride. Ferley rode Russell
Rodeo’s Fancy Pants, while
DeMoss, of Heflin, La., was teamed
with Western Rodeo’s Lap Dance.
Ferley then drew Korkow Rodeo’s
Queeny for the Wrangler ProRodeo
Tour Round, where he scored a
rodeo-best 86 points. He easily
won the average with 169 points on
two head over Scott Miller of
Hemet, Calif. Miller finished with
163 points after a second-place
finish in the Tour Round with an
84-point ride aboard Western
Rodeo’s X74.
Steer wrestler Chad Van Campen
captured the average victory with
a three-head total of 19.7
seconds. Van Campen, of Granada,
Colo., placed in all three rounds
and walked away with $8,400. He
finished third in the first round
with a run of 6.3 seconds, was
fourth in the second round with a
time of 6.1 and finished fourth in
the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Round
with a 7.3-second run en route to
the average title. Wade Sumpter of
Fowler, Colo., turfed his steer in
6.0 seconds to win the Tour Round.
The third Chad to take home an
average title from Salinas was
tie-down roper Chad Johnson of Cut
Bank, Mont., who finished with a
total time of 31.8 seconds on
three head. Johnson edged
five-time world champion Cody Ohl
for the victory. However, Ohl, of
Hico, Texas, who finished with a
total time of 32.1 seconds,
captured the Tour Round victory,
stopping the clock in 9.3 seconds.
Johnson pocketed $7,328, while Ohl
picked up $5,050.
The California Rodeo Salinas
marked the fourth stop on the 2006
Wrangler ProRodeo Summer Tour.
Contestants not only compete for
money at the Tour rodeos, but for
valuable Tour points that qualify
them for the ProRodeo Tour Summer
Finale upon the conclusion of the
Summer Tour.
The ProRodeo Tour Summer Finale
will be held Sept. 28-30 in Omaha,
Neb. Eight of the 12 stops,
including Salinas, on the Summer
Tour will be televised on Fox
Sports Network. Check local
listings for times in your area.
Bareback riders Paul Jones and
Andy Martinez continued their
winning ways, tying for the
average win in Salinas with a
two-head total of 165 points.
Jones, of Elko, Nev., who was
coming off the average win at the
Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in
Colorado Springs, Colo., won the
first round, scoring 83 points on
Western Rodeo’s Johnny Cake and
placed third in the Tour Round
with an 80-point ride on Korkow
Rodeo’s Haywire. He cashed
checks totaling $8,814.
Martinez, of Pavillion, Wyo., has
been on a tear since winning the
2006 Pace Picante ProRodeo
Chute-out title in May. The
25-year-old has owned the Summer
Tour after winning the Tour Round
at the first stop in Reno, Nev.,
and then following it up with an
average victory at the second stop
in Prescott, Ariz., on the Fourth
of July.
Martinez continued his dominance
in Salinas, riding Korkow
Rodeo’s Anchor Bay for 84 points
and the Tour-Round victory and a
share of the average title with
Jones. Martinez, who won $6,435,
finished in a tie for fourth in
the first round with an 81-point
ride on Russell Rodeo’s Wagon
Boss.
Reigning world champions Clay
Tryan and Patrick Smith returned
to the top of the leaderboard in
Salinas by winning the team roping
average title in 44.2 seconds on
five head. Tryan, of Billings,
Mont., and Smith, of Midland,
Texas, won the fourth round with a
time of 6.9 seconds and finished
third in the Tour Round with a
time of 8.6 seconds en route to
the title. The each picked up
$7,283.

in the average with a total time
of 45.7 seconds. Woolman, of
Llano, Texas, and Harrell, of San
Angelo, Texas, won a total of
$5,346 in Salinas.

route to the average victory in
Salinas. Bankston, of Gavilan
Hills, Calif., stopped the clock
in 16.16 seconds to win the Tour
Round and finished with a four run
total of 65.41 seconds to secure
the average title. She placed in
every round and was the big money
winner in Salinas pocketing
$12,016.
Bobby Welsh outdistanced reigning
world champion bull rider Matt
Austin for the average title in
Salinas on Sunday. Welsh, of
Gillette, Wyo., rode both his
bulls for a combined score of 175
points, while Austin, of Wills
Point, Texas, finished with 171.
Welsh rode Growney Brothers’
Crystal Ball for 83 points and a
third-place finish in the first
round. In the Tour Round, he drew
Corey & Horst’s Seven of
Hearts and rode him to the tune of
87 points to finish second in the
round. Corey Terry of Brownwood,
Texas, won the Tour Round with an
88-point ride on Western Rodeo’s
Poison Ivy. Welsh added $9,619 to
his wallet.
