Event Notes

The Jack Daniel’s Invitational, stop number 21 on the 2006 Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler (BFTS), brings fans intense action as the rankest bucking bulls in the industry challenge the top 45 PBR athletes in the world. The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) hit Allstate Arena for three performances held over the course of two days in Chicago, Ill. on April 21-22. The million dollar title of PBR World Champion will be on the line as the PBR bucks into action at 8 p.m. on Friday evening, while Saturday is a double header with performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

36-year-old Adriano Moraes (Cachoeira Paulista, Sao Paulo, Brazil) leads the PBR world standings by just 25 BFTS points however Moraes will not be competing in Chicago due to a possible stress fracture in his pelvis. 22-year-old Mike Lee (Decatur, Texas) is in hot pursuit of Moraes and will be competing at the Jack Daniel’s Invitational. Reminiscent of the 2004 race, Moraes maintains his stranglehold on the top spot week in and week out despite nagging injuries. With PBR career earnings of $1,977,272, Moraes hovers near the $2 million milestone and is the third highest ranked money earning PBR athlete of all time.

The Chicago event marks the return of 2005 PBR World Champion Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) who has sat out the past seven events in order to spend time with his wife and new daughter.

Other athletes returning from injury:

Jake McIntyre (Zolfo Springs, FL) – Sustained a broken left collarbone (riding arm) in Worcester, Mass., held Jan. 6-8.

Bowdy Peach (Mooreland, OK) – Has been out with a strained left groin sustained in Kansas City, Mo., held Mar. 10-12.

Cory Rasch (Clarksville, TN) - Rasch strained his right (riding arm) rotator cuff in Tacoma, Wash., Mar. 18-19.

Top 5 Rider Notes

  • #1 Adriano Moraes (Cachoeira Paulista, Sao Paulo, Brazil) - Moraes will not be competing in Chicago due to a possible stress fracture in his pelvis. Moraes has achieved one event championship and four reserve championships this season. The two-time PBR World Champ (1994 & 2001) is gunning for an unprecedented third PBR World Title. Moraes, 36, maintains his stranglehold on the top spot week in and week out despite his injuries. His riding percentage is 59.65% which is identical to Mike Lee's and the highest among the top five. With PBR career earnings of $1,977,272, Moraes hovers near the $2 million milestone and is the third highest ranked money earning PBR athlete of all time.

  • #2 Mike Lee (Decatur, TX) – Lee, 22, captured his third tour title of 2006 in Kansas City, Mo. when he took top honors of the Cabela’s Classic, March 10-12. Lee duplicated the championship form that delivered tour titles earlier this season in both Anaheim and Fresno, Calif. Lee has career earnings totaling an impressive, $1,919,756 and trails Moraes by only 25 BFTS points. He etched his name in the history books as the first PBR athlete to simultaneously earn both the Built Ford Tough World Finals event title and the Built Ford Tough Million Dollar World Championship, which he accomplished in 2004. In comparison with 2005, Lee’s record is dramatically improved. Shoulder surgery sidelined him for most of 2005 and last year at this point in the season Lee had a few hundred series points in comparison with 5,944 BFTS points earned to date.

  • #3 Guilherme Marchi (Leme, Sao Paulo, Brazil) – While an event championship has eluded him this season, Marchi earned reserve championship honors at the Worcester Classic in January and has a total of six top five finishes to his credit this season. Marchi, 23, never broke stride following his 2005 PBR World Finals event championship, and is a formidable contender for his first PBR crown with a current riding percentage of 57.14% and PBR career earnings totaling $664,532. Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) edged Marchi for the 2005 world title by 1,043 series points. Marchi was the Brazilian Bull Riding Champion in 2002 before moving to the United States to compete where he experienced instant success, qualifying for his first World Finals in 2004. Marchi maintained the highest riding percentage – 66.3% - of any rider in the 2005 season.

  • #4 Jody Newberry (Ada, Okla.) – Newberry, 25, finished in the runner-up position in Tacoma, Wash. on March 18-19 and followed up with a third place finish in Billings, Mont. on April 7-9. He captured top honors and $54,728 on his home turf in Oklahoma City, Okla. at the end of January and has been in and out of the top five all season. Newberry, whose career earnings total $780,196 is riding 56.60% of his bulls and is 442.25 points away from the number one spot in the world standings and has accumulated $110,745 in season earnings to date.

  • #5 Sean Willingham (Summerville, Ga.) - Willingham earned the distinction on March 19 in Tacoma, Wash. of becoming one of only three men to have captured three tour titles this season. In the course of one feverish month, the Oh Boy! Oberto Invitational event champion took top honors of the Portland Express Personnel Invitational, the Reno-Tahoe Invitational, and punctuated his west coast reign with the Tacoma title. The Portland, Ore. championship was the first tour title of his PBR career. Willingham, whose career earnings total $408,287, moved into the top five in the BFTS world standings following Tacoma. He trails top ranked Moraes by 493 points. Willingham, 24, is currently riding 51.79% of his bulls and has accumulated $160,811 in season earnings to date.

Ford Truck Moment of Truth

When the leader of the competition enters the final round - the Built Ford Tough Championship Round - and scores enough points in this round to maintain his lead and win the event title, he also wins the Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus. When the leader entering the final round does not win the event, the bonus increases by $5,000. If the bonus is claimed, the purse returns to $5,000.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car presents the "Enterprise Ride with the Best" Bonus

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is excited to announce that the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Ride With The Best promotion enters its third year with a twist. It's always been cowboy versus bull, but this year the $5,000 prize goes to the winning athlete, whether he has two legs or four.

A PBR Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) presented by Wrangler event winner will ride in the following BFTS event for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Ride With The Best bonus as the last ride taking place before intermission. That rider will receive a $5,000 cash bonus if he covers his bull in the preliminary go rounds of that event (excluding the first day of three day shows). This year, the reward will not only be $5,000 to the cowboy if he rides, but the bulls also have a chance to cash in on the $5,000 bounty, which goes to the stock contractor if his bull launches the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Ride With The Best bull rider.

Wiley Petersen, the winner of the Built Ford Tough Invitational will be eligible for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Ride With The Best bonus money in Chicago.
