I rode at a farm that threw anyone on anything so the first horse I ever got on was a barrel horse. This particular horse had a lil bit of a screw loose. It ran away with me at our first show... the next one was gate sour.... the next one dove barrels.... and riding those ones made me the best rider I could be.... I think you can start slow work... walking patterns and trotting a little as soon as you can ride well... Just learn the steps of a pattern and get teh muscle memory down and just learn that way and add a lil speed at a time until your ready...

Hope it helps...

I always had an interest in barrel racing, but rode probably for about four or five years before I started running. I'd say you've absolutely got to have your basics down... handle your horse at any speed, know your leads, that kind of thing. Then take it slow.. I can't even tell you how many girls I've seen screw themselves and their horses up by pushing too hard, too fast. No one's going to be impressed by a rider who doesn't know what she's doing or endangers others... there's absolutely no shame in taking your time! (lol, sorry for that rant.)

Hope that helps, and have a great time!
